about

'Field Notes' started with scratchy "field recordings" on my iPhone 3, in various locations in Vermont and Slovenia.

With engineer and producer Michael Chorney, I then recorded over these field recordings: marimba, mbira, propane-tank drum, udu, bells and wooden box.

Michael Chorney then recorded (prepared) guitar over 'Milton Bells' and 'Antefreezeup'. Thank you MC.

On 'Here You Are', the "field" recording was a marimba improvisation; Julia Josephine Slone then recorded vocals over the top. Thank you JJS.

'Oysters' is a song by Benji Hughes, recorded by Meshell Ndegeocello. Miriam Bernardo (voice) and I recorded our version of this song live in a single take. Thank you MB.

I recorded a layer of vibraphone on 'Svirel Bells' in Nashville TN. Sarah Vardy engineered this recording. Thank you SV.

Ryan Power did the mastering. Thank you RP.

'Too Long' features layers of bowed marimba over a "field recording" of a skipped record. Steve Feinbloom gave me a bass bow to use on the marimba. Thank you SF.

On 'With A Grateful... Heart' the "field recording" is unheard. I first recorded my own pulse, tapped out on a wooden box. The composed parts -- for box, udu and marimba -- were then recorded to this flexible, organic pulse-click track.

The "field recording" for 'Milton Bells' was recorded in Milton, VT 05468.

The "field recording" for Svirel Bells was recorded in Stanjel, Slovenia.

The "field recording" for 'Too Long' was recorded in Milton, VT 05468.

The "field recording" for 'Antefreezeup' was recorded in Milton, VT 05468.
