about

Jane Boxall: “In Spring 2009 I played -- literally single-handedly -- in Piano By Nature’s 0 to 8-hand piano concert. This fascinating program of music, curated by Rose Chancler of upstate New York, featured music for a single piano played by up to eight performers simultaneously. The program included music from several centuries, featuring new compositions by David Liptak (7 hands) and Marc Mellits (4 hands). At the time I was working on my six-mallet marimba technique, and the piano concert sparked the idea of performing a program of solo marimba music using 0 to 8 mallets.”

Three years, two commissions, one successful KickStarter campaign and innumerable blisters later, Boxall had developed and recorded the music that comprises her new solo marimba album, Zero To Eight Mallets. Opening with a zero-mallet composed solo by Boxall, and closing with Ludwig Albert’s 8-mallet piece ‘Marimba Moods II’, the album contains eclectic music written between 1909 and 2012.
